My Waiting Days

Dear brothers and sisters,
Happy 2015! Great news! I am officially joining the army on January 19th. I came back to Taiwan in May, 2014, and it's been way too long. Nevertheless, half a year wasn't wasted. I volunteered at a caring center, led my church's youth group, and worked at an after school English program.
Once a week, elders from neighborhoods around my church will come to our church's caring center. We gather them here to get their health checked, tell them stories, do some exercise, and so on. I started volunteering in September, 2014, and I was the greeter and the staff's assistant.  Besides volunteering once a week, I led my church's youth group. Because it didn't have any counselor for a while, I told the church that I wanted to help out and became a counselor. Youth group has always been my favorite part of church life, so it was a dream come true. I got to lead the youths with three other staffs.
Serving the elders and leading the youths were good times, yet I was grateful for my part-time job the most. The fact that I was waiting to join the army stopped me from being employed; employers didn't want to spend time training me and then lose me because of military service. But God was gracious. One of my elementary school classmates worked at the English school, and the school needed a teacher assistant badly. I offered myself and told them that I came back from the U.S., and they hired me. Three times a week, I worked as a teacher assistance of an after school English class that teaches children from age of five to ten. I helped teachers prepare materials such as posters for the class, pick up kids from their school, get the kids ready to go home when their parents come pick them up, and clean up the classrooms after the lessons. I sometimes had the opportunity to teach the children some English for like half an hour per class. Also, because of my relatively authentic accent, the school asked me to do telephone teaching. I would make a phone call to the children and talked to them in English one by one. This was a way to encourage the kids to speak up in English and to improve their listening. The most challenging part of the job was keeping the children well-behaved. I tried to pretend that I was a foreigner who doesn't speak Chinese, but that didn't work out because I couldn't discipline them in English; the kids wouldn't listen to me when they didn't understand what I said. Still, I like these kids, and my waiting days would be very dull if I didn't have this job.
It is interesting how I served almost every age group. From taking care of elders to teaching kids English, I have seen many things. And now I am about to witness another part of the society. They say that in the army, there are all kinds of people. It's basically a smaller version of the "adult world". Some friends told me that I've better watch my back. The army could be a tough place for me. So here are my prayer requests:

1. Pray that I will have wisdom in the army. There will be injustice occur in the army, and may God teach me how to face them.
2. Pray that there will be perseverance in me. There will be times when I may get bullied. May God be with me and lead me through the situations.
3. Pray that I can discern the truth. I was told that I'm a gullible person, and I couldn't agree with that no more. There will be voices from various directions, so may His truth rules above me.

I couldn't give enough thanks to all of you for keeping me in your prayers. May I do the same to you all. Emmanuel. Thank you!

Where am I now?

Dear brothers and sisters,
Peace be with you. Here are updates of my STM (short-term mission) in July and my life. To some of you, I'm sorry for not notifying you in time. Here's a quick summary of the STM.
My church, DCCC (Davis Chinese Christian Church), sent us to Shanxi, China this summer. From July 7th to 18th, we taught the local church's kids English and held a youth camp. I went to the same STM last year, so I was pleased to see old friends and students. God had once again shown His greatness among the kids, youth, and even our team; we had more young people on the team this year (the first picture below is the youth on our STM team), and we connected better with young people. Some of the youth weren't Christians, but by God's grace, they heard about the gospel through our ministry. The girls in the third picture became believers at our youth camp. I'm here to thank those who prayed for our STM. Thank you for your prayer.

The STM ended on the 20th of July, but I didn't go back to Davis. Instead, I went back to Taiwan. I decided to take a break from school and go back to Taiwan to serve the military. I felt lost and unmotivated in my studies, and my grades were falling apart. But God is gracious. He had a plan for me in Taiwan. I was blessed to reunite with my parents and grandparents, to have a part-time job at an after school English program, and to learn more about myself. Coming back to Taiwan gave me a chance to rediscover and readjust myself.

Even though coming back to Taiwan was a blessing, sometimes I felt lonely and sad. While everyone moved on, I failed to stay on top of my calling of being a student. The process of getting into the service, on the other hand, was having some issues; it had a "traffic jam". There were a lot of people waiting to serve the military, but there weren't enough men power to do boot camps. And now it's been six months since I came back to Taiwan, and I am still waiting. Yet God works through our challenges; we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (Romans 8:28).
  Here are some prayer requests:
  1. Pray that I can be in the army soon. News says that all who were waiting for joining the military will be in by the end of this year.
  2. Pray that I can follow God faithfully and understand His will on me. One of the main reason to be back in Taiwan is to know what God wants me to be for His kingdom.
  3. Pray that I use my time well while waiting the military. Hope that the time in Taiwan can be productive and not wasted.

Thank you all for your prayer and support. I will be updating more about my life in the next letter.

Short-Term Mission to Shanxi 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
Last year, I went to Shanxi (山西), China for a short-term mission trip. This summer, I will be going to Shanxi, again. We will have two short-term mission teams from DCCC (Davis Chinese Christian Church) . One will be serving at Qixian (祁縣) , and the other will be serving at Yuci(榆次). Both cities are located in Shanxi province. I will be serving in Qixian.

From July 7 to 18, our STM team will be serving at Qixian's local church. The first week we will hold an English camp at the church. There will be three levels of English classes: Beginner class, intermediate class, and advance class. I'll be helping out the beginner class this year. The second week we will be holding the Christian Youth Camp at church. Youths from junior high to senior high (maybe some college students) from two main churches: Taigu (太谷) church and Qixian church, will come to the camp and learn more about their faith. We'll be leading worship, Ethical teaching, English Corner (teaching English), games, and story telling for the youths.

The main goal of our trip is to build relationships with the kids and youth, learn more about their faith and their backgrounds, and hopefully help them grow in faith. Some youths may have complicated backgrounds, so our team has been trained to assist them when they need help with dealing things such as families, career, etc. We also use this opportunity to share more about Christ love to help then grow spiritually. Some of them are new believers, seekers, or non-believers. I went last year and built great relationship, so I want to go back this year to follow-up.

Prayer request:
1. Pray for our team's strength. Personally, I'll be leading worship, taking care of beginner English class, which is basically like a VBS (Vacation Bible School) but much longer, leading bible studies and doing English corner. Our other teammates will have more than one task to do, as well. So pray that we will have enough strength to do well in all the ministries.
2. Pray for team's unity: Pray that our team can work together well when we are teaching, leading bible studies and leading worship.
3. Pray for health and spiritual attacks: Last year, most of us got sick during the trip. Also, last year, some cult came into church and shared things that aren't biblical. Pray that these attacks from Satan won't stop us from expanding God's kingdom.

Thank you all for your prayers.

In Christ,
Joseph

Prayer Letter about Short-term mission to Shanxi, China.

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
This Summer, I will be going to Shanxi (山西), China for a short-term mission trip. We will have two short-term mission teams from DCCC (Davis Chinese Christian Church) . One will be serving at Taigu (太谷) , and the other will be serving at Yuci(榆次). Both cities are located in Shanxi province. I will be serving in Taigu.
From July 5 to 22, the Taigu STM team will be serving at Taigu Christian Church. The first week at the church, we will be helping the Christian Youth Camp held by Taigu Christian Church. Youths from junior high to senior high (maybe some college students) from different local churches around Taigu will come to the camp and learn more about church life. We'll be leading worship for the camp. We'll also have Ethical teaching, English Corner (teaching English), games, and story telling for the youths. The second week, we will hold an English camp at the church, and some of the students from the youth camp will stay and participate. There will be three levels of English classes: Beginner class, intermediate class, and advance class.

The main goal of our trip is to build relationships with the youth, learn more about their faith and their backgrounds, and hopefully help them grow in faith. Some youths may have complicated backgrounds, so our team has been training to assist them when they need help with dealing things such as families, career, etc. We also use this opportunity to share more about Christ love to help the youths grow spiritually. Some of them could also be new believers, seekers, or non-believers.

Pray for the team that we may receive wisdom and strength from God. May the Holy Spirit guide us as we serve at the youth camp and the English Camp. There will be about a hundred youths at the youth camp, so definitely pray for the STM team. Pray also for the students' hearts, that they can be open so that we can build relationship.

I, personally, will need prayers, as well. I will be leading worship, games, and teaching the advance English. I have to say that without God and your prayers, it will be a hard time for me to plan and lead all these things.

Growing up in Taiwan and coming to the U.S., I was blessed to know both English and Chinese, and this summer, God opens a door for me to use the gift of being bilingual to serve His kingdom, to love His people and to learn more about His calling.

Thank you all for your prayers.

Joseph

Serving in Children's Worship

Dear brothers and sisters,
How are you all doing? May you keep running for the prize in heaven. I am now serving in my church called Davis Chinese Christian Church (DCCC), and I serve in the children's ministry. I usually lead children's worship in the morning, and give them some lessons about the bible. Currently, I enjoy serving the children. Praise God that He uses me, and I have the privilege to serve Him. Please pray for me that I can manage my time well so that I can both serve and do my school work.

Dear all,
Greetings from Davis, California, U.S.A. May your life be blessed by our Father. I want to start updating my walk with God to you all, and I would like to have your prayers. I really need them because I am weak. I can't do His will by myself. I believe everyone is called to be a missionary; everyone is called to be a witness of God, and as a student and a church member, my mission field is my campus, and my church is my home. So this blog will be my newsletters blog, and I will try to update it once a month. Thank you for your support.

I also started another blog for my daily life. Check it out.
